Who We Are?

The Centre for Risk, Safety and the Environment (CERISE) was established on 24th June 2011. CERISE’s mission is to promote to the wider public and the local SME (industrial and business) communities the values and necessities of safety. To provide to the local SME (industrial and business) communities applied solutions, executive training and consulting. To create a new generation of highly educated researchers and scholars in the areas of Risk, Safety and the Environment.

CERISE aims to foster high level research and development, to provide tailor made services to the local and wider business and industrial community and finally to establish itself as a provider of high level educational output in the areas of safety and risk assessment in the micro and macro environment.

In the public sector, at an EU and international level, risk management is an increasingly integral part of governance and policy- making with formal risk assessment approaches finding their ways into public safety policy, civil protection and emergency preparedness planning.

CERISE (Centre) is unique in Cyprus in its mission to work with the local industrial and business community, stakeholders and public authorities to encourage the adoption of risk management practices and to foster high level research and development in this area. The Centre will serve these audiences, providing fundamental research as a basis for developing the discipline of risk management in the long term and for exploring new areas.

CERISE is a multi-disciplinary research group with competencies across mathematical modelling, social and behavioural psychology, climate change and other environmental stressors, and in the understanding of the perils and processes that drive individual threats, and the implementation of risk reduction strategies.

CERISE’s research interests lie in:

  • Risk Assessment in the Built Environment (small scale, large scale)
  • Climate Change Risks and Risk Assessment
  • Risk Communication
  • Risk Perceptions
  • Safety Management in micro establishments
  • Safety Management and Human Factors in Critical Infrastructure Protection establishments
  • Natural disaster management

CERISE aims to create high quality output and build a high caliber reputation along three main areas:

Research – through its participation in National, EU and private research projects CERISE aspires to create a vibrant research community within Cyprus and the broader geographical area.  Postgraduate and Postdoctoral research fellows will be recruited to work in projects relevant to the Centre’s thematic pillars.,  creating an inspiring and productive environment, which is primarily focused on delivering high quality research output on the CERISE topics. CERISE’s objective is to develop an environment that stimulates scientific debate

The Centre will fulfill its aims through:

  • Recruitment of top-class academics with the potential to not only contribute to science but to become trend-setters.
  • The recognition and adoption of best practices in research
  • Publication in peer reviewed Journals, proceedings, and/or books
  • Inviting highly respected visiting scholars, and finally;
  • Contribution to science through extensive dissemination of our research results e.g. through publications and conferences

Education / Training – CERISE intends to provide an academic framework for risk science and create a career path for researchers emerging from the University. The Centre will provide high-quality teaching that will challenge students and help them develop skills in critical thinking, research and problem-solving that can be applied to a career in either research or the broader business community.  Through its taught programmes CERISE aims to foster the dissemination of ideas, theories and methods to its students.

CERISE has begun putting this framework in place with the introduction of the Masters Programme in Occupational Health and Safety. The Centre aims to build on this programme with the development of a complementary Masters Programme on Risk.

CERISE will develop a stimulating academic environment for students through:

  • Providing high-quality teaching by talented teaching staff
  • Providing high-quality research topics for student master theses that can result in publications
  • Setting up a student external practice period/internship in business or academia

Consultancy – One of the key aims of the CERISE is to assist organisations to effectively manage risk and uncertainty in the fields of occupational, industrial, natural and environmental hazards. To this end the Centre will further develop its work in the field of risk consultancy and build upon the work carried out such as its work as Member of the Republic of Cyprus committee that carried out the Risk Assessment for the Sea Dumped Unexploded Ordnance (Explosives) in the Gulf of Limassol – June 2013.

There is also scope for the Centre to provide high quality, focused training solutions to the local policy-making, industrial and wider research communities which meet the unique demands of each.   It is anticipated that as the level of engagement and understanding of the concept of risk amongst local stakeholders increases more demand will surface for focused, high quality training programs.

CERISE aims to become a technology transfer provider within the Cypriot industrial and manufacturing community and to establish an interactive communication channel between the academia and the business community. As already mentioned CERISE aims to become the R&D preferred partner for the local industrial and manufacturing community as well as work closely with Governmental stakeholders and industrial associations. This aim will be fulfilled through:

  • The production of focused, applied, solutions to real business problems
  • The encouragement of interaction between academia and the Cypriot industrial and manufacturing community
  • The provision of high level consultancy in the aforementioned areas

The areas of strength of CERISE could be summarized as:

  • Use, development and testing of statistical and mathematical methods and solutions for safety
  • Risk assessment and management
  • Organizational aspects of safety with a particular focus in the SME Community.

CERISE has already established partnerships with internationally known research centers and an advisory board of acclaimed academics is in place.
